Report: Yankees will call up Tyler Austin on Saturday

The Yankees will recall born-again prospect Tyler Austin to replace the roster spot left by the departing Alex Rodriguez, Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports.

Austin, 24, can play first base and the outfield. With the DH spot free, Austin figures to get some time when Mark Teixeira rests, and in right until Aaron Judge arrives.

The tall, muscular right-handed hitter missed significant time due to a wrist injury in 2013 and 2014, but came back strong afterward. He hit .260 in 210 plate appearances in Double-A this season, but tore it up in Scranton with a .323 average and .637 slugging percentage in 234 plate appearances. The power is real; Austin should hit plenty of home runs in New York.

Baseball Prospectus’s Tucker Blair took a look at Austin back in 2014 and came away impressed.
