Yankees place Luis Severino on 15-day DL with right triceps strain

NEW YORK — After allowing a career-high seven runs on seven hits, four walks and a hit by pitch through 2 2/3 innings, it seemed as if things couldn’t get worse for Luis Severino. Then, he was examined at the hill and escorted off the field by trainer Steve Donahue with soreness in the back of his right elbow.

After the game, the Yankees announced that they had placed Severnio on the 15-day DL after an MRI revealed a mild right triceps strain. He won’t pick up a baseball for five-to-seven days.

Severino’s final pitch was a fastball, coming at 95 mph. He had been hitting 96-97 with regularity.

This puts the Yankees in a bad place; they don’t have a fantastic starter to take his spot with CC Sabathia on the DL, with Anthony Swarzak, Chas Green, Kyle Haynes and Luis Cessa to choose from.

With the disastrous outing, Severino’s ERA is now up to 7.46 in seven starts, a puzzling occurence considering the success he had as a 21-year-old rookie in 2015. An injury might help explain that.
