Game 24 Recap: Too Much Trumbo

The Yankees can’t be excited to face Mark Trumbo 18 more times.

In his first career at-bat against Luis Severino, Trumbo launched a home run to left field, erasing an early 1-0 Yankee lead. Two at-bats later, he took Severino deep again for a 2-run shot. The Orioles never looked back.

Chris Tillman started for Baltimore and was his good self tonight, allowing only 1 run on 5 hits in 7 innings. Carlos Beltran was the only Yankee able to get more than one hit, although he managed just one off Tillman. Other than that the offense was lifeless as usual.

New York fell to 8-16 on the season and now holds a 3-9 record away from the Bronx.

THE PLAY — MARK TRUMBO 2-RUN HOMERUN (+.186 WPA)

The second of Trumbo’s two home runs, and his eighth of the season. With Adam Jones on first base, Trumbo launched an errant inside breaking ball into the left field seats. Trumbo has been one of Baltimore’s hottest hitters thus far in 2016, slashing .337/.381/.612.

TOP PERFORMERS (BUT YOU KNEW THIS ALREADY…)

Yankees — Carlos Beltran: 2-for-4

Orioles — Mark Trumbo: 2-for-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI

THE HIGHLIGHT — MACHADO POPS OUT WITH THE BASES LOADED

This was one of the lone bright spots of Severino’s start tonight. In the bottom of the second and Baltimore’s best hitter Manny Machado at the plate, Severino threw a first pitch slider trying to induce a groundout. That didn’t happen, but Machado reached for it and popped up to Mark Teixeira, limiting further damage.

NOTES

— Alex Rodriguez left Tuesday’s game with a right hamstring injury and was replaced by Dustin Ackley. He will receive an MRI to determine if he will need a DL stint.

— There has been a lot of chatter recently about whether or not Severino needs to be demoted to work on his command. Aside from the two home runs, Severino was OK on Tuesday. In five starts this season, Severino has a 6.31 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and .333 batting average against.

— Starlin Castro has cooled off considerably since his hot start, going 0-for-4 again tonight. He’s still slashing .300/.337/.478 but if the Yankees’ offense wants to get going Castro will likely need to be the one to step up.

THE QUOTE

“Tomorrow is a must-win game for us” — outfielder Brett Gardner
